Social Half-Ironman

The plans are coming together for this Saturday, 22 Sept.  There will be two groups of cyclists – a slower group will leave Druridge Bay at 10, a faster group at 11.  The day will be fully supported, with tea, coffee and cakes at various points (thanks Rebecca & Tracey!).  If you get into difficulties on the bike, there will be an option of getting a lift back some of the way.

Swim – anyone wanting to swim the 1.9k can do so starting from 9am.  The swim is from the Visitor Centre to Bird Poop island, back to the jetty, back to Bird Poop island and back to the visitor centre.  Make sure you leave enough time to dry off and get changed ready for your group departure time.

Bike – the bike route is challenging, a touch over 56 miles.  Leaving Druridge, we’ll head to Acklington, Felton, Old Swarland and across to Longframlington before the first stop at Rothbury.  We then head along the B6341 through Thropton and over Billsmoor to Elsdon, then into granny gear for the climb over the Gibbet and a second cake stop.

The fast descent from the Gibbet takes you to West Harwood Gate and the B6342 to Rothley crossroads.  Straight across to Longwitton and Netherwitton, then a left turn past the hall and up Hallbank Wood.  Into Longhorsley and straight across the A697, then right to head for Causey Park.  Across the A1 and back to Druridge via West Chevington and Woodside.  See

Run – for anyone still feeling sprightly, there is the option to run off the bike.  A half marathon is 3 laps of the lakes.  Alternatively, take a Garmin and run along the beach or round the park.  The run will be supported, looping back through the car park.

The day will finish with a club social at the Bolams (Lealands, Lesbury NE66 3QN) from 7:30.  All members are welcome, whether or not you’ve taken part in the day’s activities or not.  Please let Jock know if you’re planning on heading along for the evening do.
