Aims of the Club
Alnwick Tri is for beginners, single-sport athletes looking to move into multi-sports and seasoned triathletes.
We aim to improve your fitness and multi-sport skills in a social, supportive environment.
Club History
Alnwick Tri was formed in November 2004, following the success of the North of Tyne Triathlon which took place at Willowburn Leisure Centre the same year. An initial open meeting advertised in the local paper has led rapidly to a membership of over 50.
Notable achievements of Alnwick Tri members include national representation (Mike Drinnan - GB duathlete, Australia 2005, Paul Jones - GB triathlete, Lausanne 2006, Hazel Eccleston, Caroline Findlay, Tracey Sample, Ian simon and Audrey Stewart - GB sprint triathletes, Hamburg 2007 ), regional sprint champion (Caroline Findlay, 2006) and second place in the regional Grand Prix (Alnwick Girls, 2006). Angharad Porteous Regional Grand Prix Junior winner 2007 and Helen Jones Regional Grand Prix Senior 3rd place 2007.
We've also been recognised for efforts in promoting triathlon (Tracey Sample - NE Region Volunteer of the Year 2006, Caitlin Simon - NE Region Young Volunteer of the Year 2006 & 2007).
Alnwick Tri achieved STAR accreditation in December 2006.
Committee
Chair - Ian Simon
Vice-chair - currently vacant
Secretary - Tracey Sample
Age 37 (but don't tell anyone I am that old)
Secretary of Alnwick Tri Club and general gopher.
2004 - First Tri (Alnwick in September). Was a huge challenge to finish as there was only about 3 or 4 people finished behind me.
2005 - First Olympic Distance (Firth of Forth – how scary was swimming across the Firth?). I actually completed this in under 3hrs – again a huge achievement
2006 - 5th Female Senior (9th Female overall) in the NE Regional Grand Prix, NE Volunteer of the Year – I was touched to be nominated for the award, never mind winning it.
2007 – 9th place at the World Sprint Triathlon Championships at Hamburg (Age 35-39)
You will know me from the lake swims and time trials or running around organising one thing or another. I can't seem to go to a meeting without managing to get myself a job.
I also have a life outside of Triathlon but I don't know how I fit it all in. I work for Procter & Gamble as a planner and I have been with Ian Simon for 19 years. My daughter Caitlin was NE Region Young Volunteer of the Year 2006 (I don't know who she takes after)
Mike Drinnan - aka The Drin, The Drinman, The Drinmeister or any variation you can think of.
- Treasurer
Duathlons are more the style so tends to be down the triathlons helping out or taking pictures (not mutually exlusive). Mike has had some spectacular triathlon disasters so if you see someone in T2 running off with your trainers (couldn't find his so just took the next ones along) or if you see someone wandering round with his wetsuit on back to front, it is likely to be him.
Hazel Eccleston - Membership Secretary
I’m a newcomer to triathlon and have only been competing for two years. So far I’ve taken part in 6 sprint triathlons (and one of those was the worlds at Hamburg) and have only done one standard distance, but I hope to increase that number and the distances. I have come to triathlon from a running background and I’m also a member of Alnwick Harriers. I’ve completed four Great North Runs, three Blaydon Races and several 10km races.
I’m married to Darran who helps me with my bike training and my running but quite sensibly leaves me to swim in the freezing cold North Sea with my fellow crazy triathletes.
Helen Jones (aka Dr Wilcox) - Coaching Rep
The veteran of the club through being the most sucessful triathlete and although considerably younger than half the club, have been in the triathlon game longer than most. I won Blyth Tri 2 years on the trot and represented my country at European Campionships. Of course this was before I married Paul who decided the best way to beat me was to get me out of competition through having our daughter Rhiannon. It won't work, I am coming back and will beat him again.
